Illinois residents returning from active duty military service abroad or mobilization may hunt protected species without paying hunting license fees if they apply within 2 years of returning from service.

Eligible veterans receive one free hunting license, one free Deer Hunting Permit, and one free State Habitat Stamp for each year of active duty service; partial years of service count as full years.

Illinois resident veterans may obtain an Illinois Hunter Education card by completing the online study section of the Illinois Hunter Education program and providing acceptable verification of military service.

Acceptable verification of service includes a DD-214 form, letters from the Illinois Department of Military Affairs, Regional Reserve Command, or appropriate military Major Command, or other documentation approved by the Department.

"Service abroad" is defined as active duty service outside the 50 United States and the District of Columbia, including all service in U.S. territories and possessions.
