SB1573 Amendment Summary

• Establishes elected Chicago Board of Education consisting of 7 members beginning April 21, 2015, replacing the mayoral-appointed board structure.

• Board members to be elected at large by school district voters in April 2015 and every two years thereafter for 4-year terms, with initial members determined by lot to serve staggered 2 and 4-year terms.

• Changes board member eligibility requirements from "appointment" to "election" language, requiring candidates to be U.S. citizens, registered voters, and 3-year Chicago residents.

• Transfers Inspector General appointment authority from the Mayor to the Board beginning April 21, 2015, while maintaining the Inspector General's investigative powers over waste, fraud, and financial mismanagement.
