Amends Section 15-169 of the Illinois Pension Code to allow pension boards to select their own counsel when pursuing mandamus actions under Section 15-156 as amended by Senate Bill No. 1 of the 98th General Assembly, rather than being limited to the Attorney General.

Amends Section 16-171 of the Illinois Pension Code to allow pension boards to select their own counsel when pursuing mandamus actions under Section 16-158.2 as amended by Senate Bill No. 1 of the 98th General Assembly, instead of requiring use of the Attorney General or other counsel.

Removes the previous language allowing boards to select "other counsel" in standard legal actions, restricting Attorney General representation to routine litigation while permitting board-selected counsel only for specific mandamus actions referenced in SB 1.
