SB2627 Summary

• Repeals the State Charter School Commission and transfers its authority to the State Board of Education for charter school approval, renewal, and revocation decisions.

• Removes provisions allowing local school boards to develop their own charter proposal processes; eliminates appeal procedures to the Commission for denied charter applications.

• Requires the State Board of Education to compile annual evaluations of charter schools from local school boards and prepare biennial reports to the General Assembly and Governor (instead of requiring school boards to submit information to the State Board by rule).

• Eliminates definitions of "Authorizer" and "Commission" from charter school law and removes Commission-related provisions throughout the Charter Schools Law.

• Repeals Section 5.796 of the State Finance Act and Sections 27A-7.5 and 27A-7.10 of the School Code that established and funded the State Charter School Commission.
