Dentists may administer influenza vaccinations (inactivated and live attenuated intranasal) to patients 18 years of age and older upon completion of Department-approved training in vaccine storage, proper administration, contraindications, and adverse reactions.

Vaccinations require a valid prescription or standing order from a physician licensed to practice medicine who administers vaccines, with established communication methods for consultation between dentist and physician.

Dentists must personally administer vaccines without delegation to assistants, document vaccinations in patient dental records, notify the patient's primary care physician of each dose, and report all data to the Illinois Department of Public Health immunization registry.

Dentists may only provide vaccinations if contracted and credentialed by the patient's health insurance or health plan; Medicare and Medicaid patients may only receive vaccinations from dentists authorized by federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services or the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services.
