Beginning July 1, 2014, all student teachers assigned to public or State Board of Education-recognized nonpublic schools must undergo fingerprint-based criminal history records checks by the Department of State Police and Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Student teachers must provide authorization for the criminal history check to the State Board of Education, which maintains records for one year and furnishes results to requesting school districts and nonpublic schools.

Student teachers bear all costs associated with the criminal history records check and any application fees established by rule, including fees charged by the Department of State Police and FBI.

Results of the criminal history check must be furnished by the State Board of Education to the higher education institution where the student teacher is enrolled.

No person may begin student teaching until the results of the criminal history records check have been returned to the State Board of Education.
