John Daniel "J.D." Slater, Sr. passed away on August 18, 2014; he was born March 8, 1919 in Rolling Fork, Mississippi and moved to the Waukegan area in 1946.

Served in the United States Army from 1942-1946, drafted during World War II and served in France, Belgium, Holland, and other European locations, including crossing the Rhine River under heavy attack.

Retired from American Motors in 1978 after 30 years of service and owned Slater's Barbecue from April 11, 1957 to 1997 on Market Street in Waukegan, known for ribs, homemade pork sausages, and secret recipe sauce.

Member of Christian Love Baptist Church in Zion and was survived by his wife Maggie, 2 children, 4 step-children, 12 grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren and extended family.

Illinois Senate expresses sympathy to the family of John Slater, Sr. and directs that a suitable copy of the resolution be presented to his family.
