Vera H. Fernandes of Peoria died on December 4, 2014; she was born March 30, 1947 in New Haven, Connecticut.

Worked as store security at Bergner's department store, then for Bradley University Police Department and Peoria Police Department in various roles including vice, patrol, violent crime detective, and neighborhood police officer until her 2011 retirement.

Received 8 letters of appreciation, 2 letters of commendation, a Distinguished Service Award, and the American Legion Meritorious Service Award during her law enforcement career.

Member of the Peoria Police Benevolent Association and International Association of Women Police for 25 years, sponsoring women to attend conferences in over 6 countries and numerous U.S. cities.

Illinois Senate mourns her passing and extends condolences to her daughter Cheryl Ann, son Michael E., 2 grandchildren, sister Renee, and numerous cousins and friends.
