School boards must equip each school with approved carbon monoxide alarms or detectors that comply with State Fire Marshal rules.

For schools designed before the effective date, battery-powered alarms are permitted; alarms powered by the building's electrical system and monitored by fire alarm systems are also allowed, and fire prevention tax levy or bond proceeds may fund installation.

For schools designed on or after the effective date, alarms must be permanently powered by the building's electrical system or be an approved detection system, and must be monitored by any required fire alarm system.

Alarms or detectors must be located within 20 feet of carbon monoxide emitting devices, maintained in operating condition, and inspected annually; schools without carbon monoxide sources are exempt.

Schools must establish plans, protocols, and procedures to respond to carbon monoxide alarm activations; the Act takes effect January 1, 2016.
