Chiefs of police in participating municipalities may elect to participate in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund instead of a municipal police pension fund, with the election becoming irrevocable except as provided in subsection (b).

Chiefs of police electing to participate in IMRF after the effective date of this act must immediately notify all police pension funds where they have service credit or pension entitlements, and must notify IMRF of those same pension funds.

Police officers receiving pension payments who re-enter active service with the same municipality must have pension payments suspended during service; if service lasts less than 5 years, the original pension applies upon retirement, but if 5 or more years of service with required contributions occur, the pension is recomputed to include the additional service and salary.

Officers who first entered service after this act's effective date and are receiving pension payments must notify their pension fund if they enter active police service with a different municipality, and their pension payments are suspended during that service.

Officers who first entered service after this act's effective date and are receiving pension payments must notify their pension fund and have payments suspended if they begin employment as a chief of police, regardless of their participation choice in any retirement fund.
