HB2512 Summary

• Creates the Protection of Individuals with Disabilities in the Criminal Justice System Task Force with up to 25 members appointed by the Attorney General within 90 days of enactment, with appointments reflecting the state's racial, ethnic, and geographic diversity.

• Task Force membership includes judges, prosecutors, public defenders, disability advocacy organizations, law enforcement, individuals with disabilities, parents/guardians, service providers, and eight ex-officio state officials.

• Task Force shall examine issues affecting adults and juveniles with disabilities in the criminal justice system, including police interactions, detention, legal representation, family communications, disability accommodations, and public safety concerns.

• Task Force must submit findings and recommendations to the Governor, Attorney General, and General Assembly by March 31, 2016, with at least 4 meetings required starting no later than 120 days after enactment.

• Act automatically repeals on June 30, 2016, and takes effect immediately upon becoming law.
