Charter schools must comply with all absenteeism and truancy policies applicable to public schools under Illinois law.

Charter schools must define a truant as a student subject to compulsory attendance who is absent without valid cause for a school day or portion thereof.

Charter schools must define a chronic or habitual truant as a student absent without valid cause for 5% or more of the previous 180 regular attendance days.

Charter schools must define a truant minor as a chronic truant who has been offered supportive services (prevention, diagnostic, intervention, remedial services, and alternative programs) that either failed or were refused.

Charter schools must define a dropout as a student in grades 9-12 removed from enrollment for reasons other than death, extended illness, medical non-compliance, expulsion, aging out, graduation, or completion of studies, and who has not transferred to another school or is not home-schooled.
