Illinois Commerce Commission must conduct at least one workshop and issue a report by June 30, 2016 on how microgrids could strengthen and enhance the electric grid.

Report should explore cost-effective grid alternatives, improved grid resiliency and outage management for critical facilities, enhanced safety and cybersecurity of electric infrastructure, and renewable energy dispatch and emissions reductions.

Defines "microgrid" as interconnected loads and distributed energy resources that operate as a single controllable entity and can function in both grid-connected and independent island modes.

Section 16-108.9 is automatically repealed on January 1, 2017.

Act takes effect immediately upon becoming law.
