Rescue squad districts may switch from appointed to elected boards of trustees if approved by referendum upon petition signed by at least 10% of district electors.

Districts approving the change shall elect 5 initial trustees at the next regular election, with staggered terms of 2, 4, and 6 years determined by lot, and thereafter 4-year terms for all trustees.

Trustee nominations require petitions signed by at least 25 voters or 5% of district voters (whichever is less) and shall be nonpartisan with no party designation on ballots.

Elected trustees commence service on the third Monday of the month following their election and must meet eligibility and compensation requirements applicable to appointed trustees.

Appointed trustees continue serving until the first election of elected trustees occurs, with any interim vacancies filled by the original appointing authority.
