IL HB4025

Requires all high school students entering 9th grade in 2008-2009 and subsequent years to complete at least one semester of civics as part of their two-year social studies requirement.

Civics course content must focus on government institutions, current and controversial issues, service learning, and simulations of the democratic process.

Establishes phased-in graduation requirements for students entering 9th grade in different school years, with increasing course loads from 1984-1985 through 2008-2009.

Allows school districts to utilize private funding to support civics education offerings.

Exempts students with disabilities whose course of study is determined by an individualized education program from these requirements.
