Requires prosecuting attorney to promptly notify the other party and file a certificate of notice with the circuit court upon learning of a defendant's death before a final and appealable judgment is entered

Court must enter an order abating the proceedings ab initio (from the beginning) upon filing of the death certificate

Establishes Article 121A governing procedures for pending direct appeals in criminal cases after a defendant's death

Article 121A provisions apply to all criminal cases with pending direct appeals following defendant death, unless superseded by Supreme Court Rules
