IL HB6325

Creates the Illinois Sentencing Policy Advisory Council under the Governor's jurisdiction to review sentencing policies and practices and their impact on the criminal justice system.

Council membership includes legislative leaders, the Governor, Attorney General, two retired judges, prosecutors, public defenders, law enforcement representatives, crime victims or victim advocates, community organization representatives, criminal justice researchers, and ex-officio members from corrections and related agencies.

Council duties include collecting and analyzing sentencing data and crime trends, preparing annual criminal justice population projections, analyzing proposed sentencing legislation, and preparing criminal justice resource statements identifying fiscal and practical effects of proposed legislation.

Council members serve without compensation but receive reimbursed travel and per diem expenses; Chair and Vice Chair are elected by majority vote of council members.

Section is scheduled to be repealed on December 31, 2020; council members' terms end on the date of repeal.
