Funeral Directors in Illinois must obtain a license from the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation and maintain a fixed place of practice or employment at a licensed funeral establishment.

Unlicensed funeral directing from storefronts, office buildings, or temporary facilities, known as "curbstone funeral directing," violates Illinois law under the Funeral Directors and Embalmers Licensing Code (225 ILCS 41/5-5 et seq.).

The practice of illegal curbstone funeral directing has increased in recent years across Illinois cities and exploits vulnerable people during emotionally difficult times.

The House urges the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation to investigate and address occurrences of illegal curbstone funeral directing throughout the State.
