Congress authorized the Medical Reserve Corps on April 23, 1908, as a reserve force of civilian medical officers available for active duty during national emergencies.

The U.S. Army Reserve has grown from 160 physicians in the 20th century to an authorized strength of 200,950 soldiers, with over 6,680 stationed in 30 locations across Illinois.

More than 12,000 Army Reserve soldiers are currently serving overseas in response to national security needs.

April 23, 2015, is proclaimed as United States Army Reserve Day in Illinois to honor past and current soldiers and recognize contributions of their families and employers.
