Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated was founded on December 4, 1906, at Cornell University as the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established by and for African-Americans.

The fraternity operates over 700 college and alumni chapters worldwide, including 32 chapters in Illinois and 141 in the Midwestern Region, and has developed the character and education of more than 200,000 men over 109 years.

Alpha Phi Alpha's mission includes leadership development, brotherhood, academic excellence, and community service through programs such as "Go to High School, Go to College," "Project Alpha," and voter registration initiatives.

Notable Alpha Phi Alpha members include Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Thurgood Marshall, U.S. Representative Danny K. Davis, and former U.S. Senators Edward Brooke and Roland Burris.

May 4, 2016 is designated as Alpha Phi Alpha Day in Illinois to honor the fraternity's service and impact on the communities it serves.
