State's Attorney must request appointment of a special prosecutor for cases involving officer-involved deaths.

Defines "officer-involved death" as a death resulting directly from an action or omission of a law enforcement officer while on duty or performing activities within the scope of law enforcement duties.

Illinois Supreme Court may adopt rules to guide or limit courts in appointing special prosecutors for officer-involved death cases.

Before appointing a private attorney as special prosecutor, courts must first contact public agencies including the Attorney General and other State's Attorney offices to determine if a public prosecutor is available at no cost to the county.

Act takes effect immediately upon becoming law.
