Advanced practice nurses must show proof of continued, current national certification in their specialty beginning May 30, 2020 to renew their licenses.

Advanced practice nurses who have continuously held an unencumbered license since 2001 and do not meet educational requirements for national certification are exempt from the certification requirement.

The Department may renew licenses for advanced practice nurses who apply for renewal on or before May 30, 2016 without current national certification proof, provided they meet all other renewal requirements.

Advanced practice nurse licenses renewed on or after May 31, 2016 under these changes are retroactive to the original expiration date.

The Act takes effect upon becoming law.
