Enterprise Zones certified prior to January 1, 2016 or on/after January 1, 2017 become effective on January 1 of the first calendar year after Department certification, while those certified between January 1, 2016 and December 31, 2016 become effective on the date of certification.

Enterprise Zones designated before the 97th General Assembly's effective date are in effect for 30 calendar years (or lesser period specified), while those designated on/after that date are in effect for 15 calendar years with Board review after 13 years for potential 10-year extension.

Enterprise Zones with a 20-year term existing on the 98th General Assembly's effective date may be extended for an additional 10 calendar years upon amendment of the designating ordinance by the municipality or county.

Applications for Enterprise Zones expiring in 2016 must be submitted by December 31, 2014; for those expiring on/after January 1, 2017, applications begin 2 years prior to expiration, with no preference given to previously designated areas.

No more than 13 Enterprise Zones may be certified annually (with exceptions for specific years and circumstances), and no more than 3 Zones may be certified in the same municipality or 18 total in the same county during the initial 10-year period beginning in 1983.
