SB2799 Summary

• Amends the Employee Sick Leave Act to include paid or unpaid time available through employment benefit plans or paid time off policies, excluding long-term disability, short-term disability, and insurance policies.

• Expands eligible family members for whom employees may use personal sick leave benefits to include stepchildren and domestic partners, in addition to existing relatives.

• Allows employers to limit family member sick leave usage to no less than 6 months' accrual at the employee's current rate, or half the annual grant for employers using years-of-service-based accrual.

• Establishes that employers may request written verification from a health care professional if required by their employment benefit plan or paid time off policy.

• Exempts railroad employees covered under the Railway Labor Act and Federal Employers' Liability Act, and allows the Department of Labor to adopt additional exemptions through rulemaking.
