Donnell "Slim" Spivey Sr. passed away on June 12, 2016; he was born on October 8, 1956 in Chicago to parents Annie Mae and Joe Spivey Sr.

Graduated from Dunbar Vocational High School in 1974 and received a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Chicago State University in 1978; worked as an educator at various Chicago schools and as a preschool teacher.

Became a Cook County Correctional Sheriff in 1988, graduating from the academy with an award for Outstanding Correctional Officer, and served for 28 years until his death.

Enjoyed music, cooking, gardening, carpentry, plumbing, mechanical repairs, and photography; was known for hosting holiday parties with raffles and Fourth of July fireworks displays for family and friends.

Illinois Senate expresses condolences to his surviving family including son Donnell Jr., five sisters, three brothers, and aunt Luella Bacon.
