Sgt. Douglas J. Riney of Fairview died on October 19, 2016 from injuries sustained while fighting enemy forces in Kabul, Afghanistan.

Riney was born July 29, 1990 at Fort Stewart Army base in Georgia; graduated from Spoon River Valley High School; and married Kylie Eddy on December 29, 2012.

Entered active military service in July 2012 as a petroleum supply specialist with the Support Squadron, Third Cavalry Regiment, First Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas; deployed to Afghanistan July 2014 to February 2015 and June 2016 to October 2016.

Received awards including the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal, four Army Achievement Medals, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with three campaign stars, and NATO Medal.

Was a volunteer firefighter with the Fairview Fire Department, member of the Vintage Church in Texas, and avid Green Bay Packers fan who enjoyed BMX cycling, motorcycles, hunting, and fishing; survived by his wife Kylie, two children, parents, and extended family.
