John J. Spillane, who passed away at age 52, was born February 1, 1964 in Chicago and lived in Oak Park where he was the third of 11 children.

Spillane graduated from Ascension Grade School (1978), Oak Park River Forest High School (1982), and University of Illinois-Chicago (1988) with a degree in finance and management; he was an accomplished wrestler, mathematician, carpenter, and trombone player.

He founded Spillane Realty in 1999 with his brother William, served as past-president of the Oak Park Board of Realtors, and was an award-winning RE/MAX Realtor inducted into the RE/MAX Hall of Fame.

Spillane advocated for 10 years to require utilities responsible for environmental contamination at Barrie Park in Oak Park to participate in remediation efforts and was known for protecting vulnerable community members.

The Illinois Senate extends condolences to his surviving wife Karri, daughters Samantha and Kaitlyn, nine siblings, and extended family.
