Every public elementary school must include at least one semester of civics education in grades 6, 7, or 8, beginning with the 2018-2019 school year.

Civics education curriculum shall focus on government institutions, current and societal issues, service learning, and simulations of the democratic process.

Civics instruction must align with Illinois Learning Standards for social science and prepare students to be competent and responsible citizens.

School districts may consult with civics education stakeholders designated by the State Board of Education when developing curriculum.

School districts may utilize private funding to support civics education offerings.
