HB2548 Summary

• Defines "remote starter system" as any device installed in a motor vehicle allowing the engine to be started by remote or radio control.

• Exempts law enforcement officers and authorized emergency vehicle operators performing official duties from the requirement to stop the engine and remove the key when leaving a vehicle unattended.

• Excludes locked motor vehicles with running engines started by remote starter systems from the definition of unattended vehicles under Illinois Vehicle Code Section 11-1401.

• Adds remote starter system operation as an exemption to the excessive idling restrictions in affected areas (Cook, DuPage, Lake, Kane, McHenry, Will, Madison, St. Clair, Monroe counties and specified townships).

• Effective immediately upon becoming law.
