Municipalities and counties may only enact automated traffic law enforcement (red light camera) ordinances at intersections where an average of 4 or more motor vehicle accidents resulting in personal injury occur each year.

For violations recorded by cameras in operation less than 30 days, counties or municipalities must issue a written warning notice to the registered vehicle owner.

First-time violators who receive multiple violation notices within a 21-day period may pay only the fine for the first violation to satisfy all remaining fines from that same period.

Violation notices must include vehicle registration information, violation details, date and time, recorded images, civil penalty amount, and a website address where violators can view the images.

Applies only to Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, Madison, McHenry, St. Clair, and Will counties and municipalities within those counties.
