Adds paragraph 8 to Section 26-1 of the School Code to allow students 5 excused absences per school year when their parent or legal guardian is an active duty uniformed services member called to duty, on leave from, or returning from deployment to a combat zone or combat-support posting.

Permits school boards discretion to grant additional excused absences beyond the 5 days to allow students to visit their deployed or on-leave parent or legal guardian.

Requires students and parents/guardians to obtain assignments from teachers prior to any excused absence period and to ensure assignments are completed before the student returns to school.

Makes technical amendments to paragraph 7 regarding military honors funeral absences by changing "and" to "and" in the compulsory school attendance exemptions.

Takes effect upon becoming law.
