IL HB4205

Amends the School Code to add two new sections (10-20.67 and 34-18.60) requiring school boards to connect at-risk students to academic support beginning with the 2018-2019 school year.

Defines "at-risk student" as one who meets any of eight criteria: failed 2+ classes in prior semester, GPA decline exceeding 2 points on 4.0 scale, chronic truancy, more than 3 suspensions, homelessness or risk thereof, custody by Department of Children and Family Services, subject of DCFS investigation, or displays recurring violent behaviors.

Requires schools to provide at-risk students with community-based or in-school academic support including tutoring, summer school, mentoring programs, special education evaluations (IEP or Section 504 plans), or academic advisor meetings.

Mandates school districts inform parents or guardians of at-risk students about available academic support resources in their district or community.

Takes effect upon becoming law.
