Township boards may fill vacancies in township offices by appointment, except for township or multi-township assessor positions which are filled under Property Tax Code procedures.

If a vacancy on the township board is not filled within 60 days, a special township meeting must be called to select a replacement.

An appointed township supervisor must fulfill bond requirements and may be a trustee appointed by majority vote of other trustees, with one vote on board matters.

Township boards may temporarily appoint a deputy to perform ministerial functions during a vacancy or physical incapacity, but temporary deputies cannot vote unless they are sitting trustees.

Any person appointed to fill a vacancy must be from the same political party as the person who vacated the office, established through voting history, party office, or participation in party caucuses.
