Requires fire chiefs, acting chiefs, department heads, or day-to-day operations leaders in municipal fire departments and fire protection districts to hold either NFPA 1001 (Fire Fighter II) and NFPA 1021 (Fire Officer II) certifications plus an associate degree in fire science or bachelor's degree, or have minimum 10 years' experience as a firefighter in that jurisdiction.

Replaces previous certification requirements from the Office of the State Fire Marshal with national standards (NFPA 1001 and NFPA 1021).

Applies to fire departments employing firefighters under specified sections of the Illinois Municipal Code and fire protection districts under the Fire Protection District Act.

Restricts appointment to leadership positions for greater than 180 days unless qualifications are met.

Effective date is August 25, 2017 (Public Act 100-425).
