HB5820 Summary

• Physical education waivers limited to 2 school years maximum (instead of 5) and may be renewed no more than 2 times, with ability to modify waivers within the 2-year period by school boards or regional superintendents.

• School boards may require new substitute teachers to provide evidence of physical fitness and shall require evidence of freedom from communicable disease through physical examination by a health care provider.

• Physical education schedule flexibility: school boards may determine schedule or frequency provided elementary students receive minimum 150 minutes per week and high school students receive minimum 225 minutes per week (replacing prior requirement of 3 days per 5-day week).

• Effective immediately upon enactment.
