Former State Representative Sam W. Wolf of Granite City died on November 4, 2016, at age 97.

Served as State Representative for the 56th District from 1974 to 1992 and was instrumental in having Belleville Area College renamed to South Western Illinois College (SWIC), with the Granite City Campus named in his honor.

Served in the United States Army from January 1941 to December 1945 as a Chief Warrant Officer in both the Asiatic Pacific Theater and European Theater.

Was elected as a Democratic National Committeeman from Illinois in June 1975 and served as Secretary-Treasurer of the Madison County Democratic Central Committee since 1970; also owned a real estate and insurance business in Granite City.

Illinois House of Representatives expresses condolences to his surviving family members, including his son Dave, sister Shirley Tretter, and five grandchildren.
