The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced the closure of McBride and Elmwood public housing buildings operated by the Alexander County Housing Authority rather than funding improvements to living conditions.

The resolution opposes the eviction of current residents, many of whom have no alternative housing options, and warns that families may relocate outside Southern Illinois or the state entirely.

The resolution criticizes the Department of Housing and Urban Development for shifting responsibility and putting Cairo families at risk.

The House strongly urges the Governor and Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity to direct funds for rebuilding and repairs to the Alexander County Housing Development in Cairo.

Copies of the resolution shall be presented to the Governor, Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, Alexander County Housing Authority, and the McBride and Elmwood public housing buildings.
