Former Illinois State Representative and State Senator Tom Johnson died on December 3, 2018, at age 73.

Served in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1968, including Vietnam War service from 1967 to 1968; earned a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Michigan (1970) and a law degree from DePaul University (1974).

Elected to the Illinois House of Representatives in 1992 and served as chairman of the House Judiciary - Criminal Law Committee during the 89th General Assembly (1995-1996), where he advanced the Sex Offender Registration Act, victim's rights laws, criminal streetgang racketeering offense, and Truth in Sentencing legislation.

Served as an appointed member of the Illinois Senate from 2011 to 2013 and on the Illinois Prisoner Review Board for 14 years, advocating for criminal justice reform including good-conduct credit programs for prisoners.
