Cook County Sheriff's Merit Board consists of 7 members appointed by the Sheriff with advice and consent of three-fifths of the county board, plus up to 2 additional members at the Sheriff's discretion.

All existing board members' terms are abolished upon the effective date of this Act, with newly appointed members serving staggered 6-year terms beginning the third Monday in March (2 members until 2019, 2 until 2021, 3 until 2023).

Vacancies occurring before a member's term expires are filled by the Sheriff with advice and consent of three-fifths of the county board for the remainder of the unexpired term.

Political affiliation restrictions require no more than one-half of board members plus one additional member to be affiliated with the same political party, and no member may have held or been a candidate for elective public office within one year before appointment.

The Sheriff may deputize members of the Board, and the Act becomes effective upon becoming law.
