SB1239 Summary

• Teachers must complete 20 hours of annual inservice training, with up to 10 hours allowed through online learning that requires proof of proficiency.

• Student instruction may not begin earlier than the day after Labor Day, and the school calendar must provide a minimum of 880 instructional hours within no more than 176 days of actual pupil attendance.

• School boards must schedule 5 emergency closure days and adopt contingency plans to make up for a minimum of 25 lost instructional hours through extended school years, longer school days, or banking additional hours.

• School calendars must include at least 45 professional development hours for teachers, scheduled according to collective bargaining agreements.

• Effective July 1, 2017.
