SB1304 - Appointment of Fire Chiefs

• Requires fire chief appointments in Illinois municipalities to meet one of two qualifications: (1) State Fire Marshal Basic or Firefighter II Certification plus Fire Officer I and II Certifications and an associate degree in fire science or bachelor's degree, OR (2) minimum 10 years' experience as a firefighter in that jurisdiction.

• Applies to all positions serving as fire chief, acting chief, department head, or any role responsible for day-to-day fire department operations lasting more than 180 days.

• Extends the same certification and experience requirements to fire protection districts under the Fire Protection District Act.

• Requirements apply only to fire departments and districts that employ firefighters under existing state hiring provisions.

• Takes effect upon becoming law.
