SB1506 Summary

• Secretary of State shall designate a space on instruction permits and driver's licenses where applicants may request to place "mental disability" designation, effective January 1, 2018.

• Acceptable proof of mental disability eligibility includes verified written statements from medical specialists, licensed physician assistants, or licensed advanced practice nurses, or other proof the Secretary deems necessary.

• "Mental disability" is defined as an individual's mental impairment that limits one or more major life activities and a record of such impairment, or an individual regarded as having such impairment.

• Mental disability designation shall be available to persons identified as individuals with a mental disability under the application provisions of the Illinois Vehicle Code.

• The designation is optional and offered to each applicant for instruction permits, driver's licenses for minors, and driver's licenses for persons 18 years or older.
