SB1526 Summary

• Amends the Illinois Highway Code to require the Department of Transportation (IDOT) to comply with its ADA transition plan during construction, reconstruction, or resurfacing projects affecting bicycle or pedestrian ways.

• Establishes that bicycle and pedestrian ways must be given full consideration in planning and development of transportation facilities and incorporated into State plans and programs.

• Requires bicycle and pedestrian ways to be established with construction, reconstruction, or other changes to State transportation facilities in or within one mile of urban areas, with exceptions for pavement resurfacing projects that do not widen traveled ways or provide stabilized shoulders.

• Allows bicycle and pedestrian ways to be included in pavement resurfacing projects when local support exists or accommodations can be added within the scope of the original roadwork.

• Mandates IDOT establish design and construction standards for bicycle and pedestrian ways, with compliance requirements applicable to planning and training purposes beginning July 1, 2007, and to construction projects beginning July 1, 2008.
