IL SB1698

Removes state preemption over assault weapons regulations, allowing municipalities to enact their own ordinances regulating assault weapon possession and ownership.

Establishes state preemption over "dangerous and unusual weapons" (defined as weapons not typically possessed by law-abiding citizens for lawful purposes, including short-barreled shotguns and machine guns), invalidating any inconsistent municipal ordinances.

Deletes the 10-day window that previously allowed municipalities to enact assault weapon restrictions without state preemption interference.

Maintains existing state preemption over handgun regulation, licensing, and registration for valid Firearm Owner's Identification Card holders.

Takes effect immediately upon becoming law.
