SB1776 Summary

• Amends Section 2-3.64a-5 of the Illinois School Code concerning state goals and student assessment by making a technical change to remove duplicate language.

• Requires the State Board of Education to annually assess all students in grades 3-8 in English language arts and mathematics beginning no later than the 2014-2015 school year.

• Requires annual science assessments at one grade in grades 3-5, one grade in grades 6-8, and one grade in grades 9-12 beginning no later than the 2017-2018 school year.

• Limits secondary education program assessments to no more than 3 assessments per student in English language arts and mathematics, with one assessment including a college and career ready determination accepted by Illinois public universities.

• Establishes a committee of up to 21 members appointed by the State Superintendent to review state assessments, their costs, and effectiveness, with authority to make recommendations to the State Superintendent and General Assembly.
