Pharmacists may dispense an emergency supply of medication for chronic diseases or conditions when unable to obtain prescriber authorization, if interruption of therapy could cause patient harm or suffering.

Emergency refills are limited to non-controlled substances only and require the pharmacy to have previously dispensed or refilled the same prescription for that patient from that prescriber.

Pharmacists must inform patients at the time of dispensing that prescriber authorization is required for future refills, through verbal, electronic, or written notification.

Emergency supply amounts are limited to no more than a 30-day supply, as determined by the pharmacist's professional judgment.

Pharmacists must document the emergency dispensing in the patient's prescription record and inform the prescriber of the emergency refill.
