SB1809 Summary

• Permits currently employed and retired State correctional officers to carry concealed firearms off-duty without violating weapons laws if they meet training requirements established by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training Standards Board.

• Permits currently employed and retired county correctional officers to carry concealed firearms off-duty without violating weapons laws if they meet the same training requirements and annual requalification at a State-certified range.

• Requires all eligible correctional officers to possess a valid Firearm Owner's Identification Card, purchase their own firearm, and register it with the Illinois Department of State Police and local law enforcement agencies.

• Prohibits correctional officers from carrying State-issued or county-issued firearms while off-duty, with violations subject to disciplinary action by their employers.

• Removes a previous exemption for Olympic and Paralympic athletes regarding possession and transport of competition firearms for the 2016 Games.
