SB1972 Summary

• Automated traffic law enforcement systems (red light cameras) may only be installed at intersections where an average of 4 or more motor vehicle accidents resulting in personal injury occur annually.

• Municipalities and counties must issue written warning notices (not citations) for violations recorded during the first 30 days of system operation at an intersection.

• First-time violators who receive multiple violation notices within a 21-day period may pay only the fine for the first violation to satisfy all remaining fines from that 21-day period.

• Vehicle owners must have recorded violation images accessible online, and intersections with cameras must be posted with warning signs and listed on the municipality or county website.

• Applies only to Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, Madison, McHenry, St. Clair, and Will counties and municipalities within those counties.
