SB2841 Summary

• Adds coverage requirement for diagnostic mammograms when medically necessary as determined by a physician, advanced practice registered nurse, or physician assistant to all health insurance policies, HMO contracts, and medical assistance programs.

• Expands breast cancer screening coverage to include comprehensive ultrasound screening and MRI when a mammogram demonstrates dense or heterogeneous breast tissue, and screening MRI when medically necessary.

• Applies new coverage requirements to all group and individual accident and health insurance policies, HMO contracts, and managed care plans amended, delivered, issued, or renewed on or after the effective date of this act.

• Clarifies that all mammography coverage, including diagnostic mammograms and supplemental screening, must be provided at no cost to the insured and not applied toward annual or lifetime maximum benefits.

• Mandates that home rule counties and municipalities providing self-insured health coverage comply with all provisions regarding mammography, ultrasound, and MRI coverage for breast cancer screening and diagnosis.
