Traps used for taking protected mammals must be marked with the owner's name and address or a Department-issued customer identification number, with unmarked traps subject to confiscation as prima facie evidence of illegal use.

Persons born on or after January 1, 1998 must present a certificate of competency before receiving a trapping license beginning January 1, 2016.

Department of Natural Resources must authorize Department personnel or volunteer instructors to provide free trapping education courses of at least 8 hours covering trapping techniques and ethical behavior, with successful completion resulting in certificates of competency.

Farm owners and tenants residing on farmland, and their children living there, may trap protected mammals during open seasons without a license using permitted devices and methods.

Persons under 16 years old seeking a trapping license must obtain written consent from their parent or legal guardian.
